How to convert a CSV to OFX

1

Drop the CSV or Excel file

The header row and date format are detected; balance and summary lines without a date drop out.

2

Pick the columns

Choose date, description and a signed amount. Optionally set the account number and currency.

3

Import the OFX

Open your finance app's OFX import and pick the downloaded file and the account it belongs to.

What's in the file

The converter writes an OFX 1.02 statement: a sign-on block, one bank account (the bank ID, account number and currency you enter, or neutral defaults), the date range of your rows, and one STMTTRN per transaction with its date, signed amount, type (credit or debit), description and a stable FITID. Long descriptions are trimmed to the 32 characters the OFX name field allows, with the full text kept in the memo.

Quicken users need the QFX flavour with a bank ID: CSV to QFX. Going the other way, OFX to CSV opens an OFX file in Excel.

Frequently asked questions

Which apps import the OFX file?

Any app that reads OFX bank statements: GnuCash (File > Import > Import OFX/QFX), Moneydance (File > Import), Microsoft Money Plus Sunset, Banktivity, HomeBank, KMyMoney and QuickBooks Online's bank upload, among others.

Which OFX version is the file?

OFX 1.02 (SGML), the version every importer reads. It holds one bank statement with the account number, currency, dates and a unique ID per transaction.

Is OFX the same as QFX or QBO?

The body is the same. QFX adds an Intuit bank ID for Quicken, and QBO adds one for QuickBooks. If you're importing into Quicken use CSV to QFX; for QuickBooks Desktop use CSV to QBO.

Will importing the same transactions twice duplicate them?

Not in apps that honour OFX transaction IDs. Each row gets an ID from its date, amount and description, so converting the same rows again gives the same IDs.

Can I convert Excel to OFX?

Yes. Drop an .xlsx file; the first worksheet is read, dates included.
