Free CSV to QIF Converter: Online, No Download Required

March 2, 2026

What is QIF Format?

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a text-based file format created by Intuit for Quicken. It's the standard import format for:

  • Quicken (all versions: Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business)
  • GnuCash (free, open-source)
  • Microsoft Money (legacy, still widely used)
  • HomeBank
  • KMyMoney
  • Moneydance

Banks used to offer QIF downloads directly, but most have stopped. Now you usually get CSV, and need to convert.

QIF File Format Explained

A QIF file is plain text. Each transaction looks like this:

!Type:Bank
D03/15/2026
T-125.50
PGrocery Store
MWeekly groceries
^
D03/16/2026
T2500.00
PSalary - Employer Inc
^

Field codes:

CodeMeaning
!Account type header
DDate
TAmount (negative = expense)
PPayee name
MMemo/note
^End of transaction

Common Issues

"Invalid file format" error in Quicken

Cause: The QIF file has a date format Quicken doesn't recognize, or the account type header is wrong.

Fix: Make sure dates are in MM/DD/YYYY or MM/DD/YY format. The converter handles this automatically.

Amounts are reversed (expenses show as income)

Cause: Your bank CSV uses positive numbers for debits.

Fix: Some bank CSVs show debits as positive (money out = positive). Toggle the "Invert amounts" option in the converter if your expenses are appearing as positive in Quicken.

Duplicate transactions after import

Cause: You imported a date range that overlaps with transactions already in Quicken.

Fix: Always check the last date imported and start the new import from the next day. In Quicken, you can delete accidental duplicates from the register.
